Upshaw had nothing to do with this aspect of the CBA. It has been in EVERY CBA from the get-go–and if you want to blame someone, blame Dick Anderson (of Dolphins fame) who single-handedly, i.e. without an executive committee’s approval verbally accepted the league’s one-sided 1977 proposals on behalf of the union. It’s stupid to blame Upshaw for everything you don’t like. Think about it for a moment. Do you believe players would strike–or stay x days longer on strike–because of the complexities of this language? If you do, I’ve got a bridge to sell you in Alaska!
